Sokoto: Protests erupt over police arrest after Deborah Samuel killing

Protesters are demanding the release of those arrested in connection with the murder of a young student at Shehu Shagari College of Education, who they accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad (SWA).

Young men and women are staging protests in various places across Sokoto with burning tires, including the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar III. Some also crowded at the entrance to the state government building.

According to the BBC, the protests were initially peaceful, but later turned violent, with people hurling stones at the Sultan's palace. An interview with the BBC near the royal palace at the time of the incident said security forces had tried to stop youths from entering the palace.

"A lot of the kids (protesters) see the king supporting the girl (Deborah), they are the ones who are throwing stones," he said. He added that police and military security forces fired tear gas, and two people were shot dead.

Murtala also confirmed the shooting of the two men, saying that at the time of compiling this report the youths were still being stoned and the security forces were firing.

A statement issued by Sokoto police on Thursday said they have arrested two suspects in the murder of Deborah, a 200-year-old Christian girl at Shehu Shagari College of Education.

The Sultan of Sokoto and President Muhammadu Buhari have condemned the killing, calling for a full investigation into the killings. Some videos and photos circulating on social media showed young men beating and burning her body.

The issue continues to be debated especially on Nigerian social media.
